Educating as Inquiry: A Collaborative Investigation into Reflective Practice is a graduate course offered by Mount Saint Vincent University for a cohort group in Summerside PEI. This is the last course in their program. The focus of this course is to draw together the experience
of earlier courses and provide a framework for thinking about
learning, teaching, curriculum, and community in a diverse
society. We
will look at various theories of inquiry in terms of their
usefulness for reflecting on the
varied and complex classroom situations people deal with on
a daily basis. In
this course we will attempt to build a reciprocal
relationship between practice and theory, using each to illuminate
the other.
Our primary tool will be 'critical incidents' which will provide the basis for analysis, discussion and subsequent action. Work on critical incidents will form one component of the ongoing course exprience. The second main component involves engaging with and responding to the ideas you encounter through readings and both our written and face-to-face conversation. Finally, you will have an opportunity to engage in practical inquiry that arises from your critical incidents. This inquiry will culminate in a written account of your investigation in which you describe the questions you asked along the way and the implications you now see for your professional work. In lieu of a formal "course outline" I have written an "Opening Letter" which describes the experience I hope we will create together. I've drafted a tentative Schedule giving some idea of what we might do and when (be prepared for this schedule to begin changing as soon as we begin working together). I've compiled a set of Readings which I will bring to our first meeting on September 23 (location and time to be determined - I'll let you as soon as I know details). In addition to the printed articles there are a bunch of Articles Online. There are a few other documents for which I can't find a URL and have located on this website under Other Docs. Over the years I've kept a reflective journal—rereading those in preparation for this gathering I found some interesting issues I wrote about—some of them appear under Snippets. From time to time I will offer a Prompt to focus our conversation. I will continue writing a reflective journal—those pieces will be added to Reflections. I've compiled a list of Links to useful websites and periodicals online. I've provided information on how to Contact me. Links to these various elements of the course can be found in the Index below and in the Menu on the left. Index |
