Reflection: Sep 14/06: QuestionsI'm still not sure whether I should be replying to people individually or replying to the group—for now I've decided to reply to the group, largely because the issues you raise are issues for more than one of you and you might find it useful to see how I think about things. Please let me know whether this is helpful or not so I can gauge whether to continue in this way or not. Another thing—I ask a lot of questions. It's not that I'm expecting you to answer me directly, they're just prompts to encourage you to ask similar questions yourself. My questions are often directed at assumptions, at language you might use that reveals some underlying belief. Please don't interpret my questions as criticism—it certainly isn't intended that way. I ask the questions I do to invite you into our collaborative investigation. Don Schon describes three "coaching" strategies: Joint Experimentation, Follow me!, and Hall of Mirrors. Joint experimentation involves a collaborative venture where both students and teacher explore together, each contributing what they discover. Follow me! involves the teacher leading the way in an experience, making explicit the reflection-in-action that undergirds each new decision. Hall of Mirrors invites both students and teacher to continually shift perspective to see the experience in different and unexpected ways. (I've actually got his book: Educating the Reflective Practitioner off my shelf and turned to apge 296 where I've done a ton of highlighting!) The invitation with all of these strategies for all participants is "What am I learning?" (that includes the teacher). You will see me engage in all three of these strategies both in person and in our written conversation. My questions reflect my efforts to be a "coach." This has gone on longer than I expected. I probably should have posted it on the website as a Reflection. I think I will copy it there. |
